| E-Province - Gamtoos River Valley |
|
The watercourse, whose name in the Khoisan language means (roughly) ‘wily as a lion' and whose lush valley is among the region's most productive, is fed by the Groot, the Salt, the Kariega and the Kouga rivers before discharging into the Indian Ocean some 50 kilometres west of Port Elizabeth. It's valley embraces the small towns of Hankey and Humansdorp together with a great many farms that, between them, produce fine, irrigated crops of lucerne, citrus, tobacco, potatoes and a variety of vegetables. Hankey was founded by the London Missionary Society in 1825 and now serves as the valley's administrative centre. Of note is its sundial (Africa's largest), the nearby toposcope (fine views), the Stinkhoutberg nature reserve (permit required) and the private Yellowwood Park riverside resort. Humansdorp , somewhat larger and closer to the sea, marks the eastern end of the famed Garden Route and serves as gateway to the villages and resort of the St Francis Bay area (among them Jeffrey's Bay. It's an attractive little town with a museum (early farming implements and domestic items), a watermill and a central park laid out to form a giant Union Jack. There are some lovely forest walks in the area, among them the three-kilometre Boskloof trail. |
