| Eastern Province - Jeffreys Bay |
|
Eastern Cape coast, west of Port Elizabeth. This attractive town and the area's 15 kilometres of beaches fringing St Francis Bay are a mecca for surfers: the great rollers that pound the shore attract international competitors as well as large numbers of local sportsmen. People also come for the fine sea-angling, the whale-watching, the hiking trails, the scuba-diving - and for the seashells, which include those of tropical Indo-Pacific as well as temperate Cape marine species. Some of the most unusual and colourful of the shells are displayed in the local museum. Farther afield are a number of enticing nature reserves, among them the Noorsekloof (good bird-watching), the Kabeljous (waterfowl on view) and the Seekoei River sanctuary (also for birders; trailists are rafted across the estuary's lagoon). There are some enchanting day-drives up the Gamtoos River valley and along the St Francis Bay coastline towards Port Elizabeth. Jeffreys Bay has excellent visitor facilities, and is especially well served by flats, self-catering cottages and B&B establishments.
