| Eastern Province - Queenstown |
|
North-Eastern segment of the Eastern Cape Province. A largish centre founded in the middle of the 19th century as a frontier settlement and named in honour of England's Queen Victoria. Queenstown serves the surrounding cattle and sheep-farming spreads. The town's main assets are its pleasant sunken gardens and, most strikingly, the spectacular mountain-and-valley scenery of the countryside around. The Bamboesberg range lies to the north-west (highest point Aasvoelberg, 2208 metres above sea level); the Winterberge mountains tumble away to the south and south-west.
The local art gallery; the town's Nature Reserve (aloes, cycads, acacias, and the yellow-blossomed tamboekie thorn tree, which is found nowhere else). The reserve is crossed by a superb scenic drive.
Tourist information centre (behind the town hall);shopping mall; restaurants; guesthouses, B&Bs.
Cradock; Port Elizabeth lies on the coast to the south-west; East London is to the south-east.
