| Eastern Province - Sunshine Coast |
|
For the most part this long, varied and marvellously attractive route winds along the coast from the Jeffrey's Bay area through the city of Port Elizabeth to East London, the country's only large river-port. The first stretch takes you around the broad sweep of St Francis Bay, its magnificent beaches and charming little resort centres; the second around Algoa Bay, playground of watersportsmen and of the great whales that come inshore during the winter and early summer months. You then enter the Ciskei region, its Indian Ocean shoreline an enchanting compound of golden, gently-shelving sands, estuaries and limpid lagoons. Inland there are attractive mountain and forest areas, challenging hiking trails, impressive game and nature sanctuaries. East London, at the eastern end of the route, is famed for the broad white beaches that extend for miles on either side. Digressions inland will lead you to and through the remarkably fertile, scenically beautiful Gamtoos and Sundays River valleys, to the Grahamstown, the 'City of Saints', and to the historic little towns of what is known as Settler Country.
