Northern Province - Warmbaths |
|
In Limpopo Province, off the main N1 highway 93 kilometres north of Pretoria. More properly spelled 'Warmbad', this handsome little town is best known - as its name suggests - for its curative springs, around which a fine spa has been developed. To the local Tswana folk it is known as Biela Bela, which means 'it boils on its own', though it has been well tamed and no longer bubbles through the mud as it used to. Hydro Spa This is by far the town's chief attraction, a huge and sophisticated complex of a 21-square metre indoor swimming pool complete with underwater jets; the water is at a constant 49 degree Centigrade and leads to a large outdoor pool. There's also a cool plunge pool; hot 'rheumatic' pool, saunas, steam rooms, gymnasium, and a hydrotherapy unit, which provides all manner of luxurious water treatments. The outdoor section in fact comprises a whole series of large hot and cold pools, a 'supertube', wave-pool and children's pool, the whole is set in beautifully landscaped gardens. One can also explore the small Nature Reserve, which contains ostrich, zebra and antelope. Hotel and chalet accommodation provided. Bird Parks Well worth a couple of hours of your time are the aviaries about 5 kilometres north of town (exotic species) and the Nylsvlei Bird and Nature Reserve, a wetland sanctuary regarded by the experts as one of the country's most rewarding. Crocodile Farm The Thaba Kwena Farm, the largest one in the country open to the public, is home to literally thousands of these giant primeval reptiles. Nylstroom is just up the road to the north; Pretoria/Tshwane 90-odd kilometres to the south. |
